Update Coronavirus

Cancellation of the Swiss NLA Championship and other measures in response to Covid-19 / coronavirus

After discussions with our member teams on Saturday 14 March, the SAFV can announce the following points in relation to the 2020 season:

National League A

=> There will be no official NLA championship in 2020 and therefore no Swiss champion (subsequently no NLA team will need to play a relegation game)

=> As soon as the situation allows it, game planning will resume for a replacement season. The specific format and timing of this season will be determined on the basis of the lifting of national and regional restrictions.

Leagues B and C

=> It is unlikely that there will be an official championship in 2020.

=> A decision is pending regarding whether there will be a shortened spring season, a Fall season (from mid August to mid October) or a split season (spring and autumn). In view of the improvised format, relegation and promotion in these leagues is highly unlikely.

U19 Elite & Challenge

=> It is unlikely that there will be an official championship in 2020.

=> A decision is pending regarding whether there will be a shortened spring season, a Fall season (from mid August to mid October) or a split season (spring and autumn).

U16 Season

=> For the time being, these measures do not yet impact the Fall season of U16 Tackle.

Flag Football

=> It is still unclear whether the Flag Football Championship will be postponed. Planned start would be in May.

=> The flag commission is evaluating several scenarios, including a shortened season after the summer break

Women’s Tackle Football

=> All games are postponed until further notice.

The SAFV and its member clubs agree that we want to play again as soon as possible. Please note:

  1. we will not return to practice and play until it is safe to do so. This may mean that different teams can start training again at different times based on guidance from each canton. Such aspects will be taken into account when a match is resumed.
  2. matches would not be resumed until the teams have the opportunity to train before

With regard to all the above points, we expect further guidance from the Confederation and the cantons regarding restrictions on public gatherings and the use of sports facilities in April and May. As soon as we receive this information, the teams and the SAFV will organise additional meetings to discuss and plan 2020 Games. Once these meetings are over, the SAFV will keep our players, fans, sponsors and the media informed through our traditional communication channels (website, social media, email to the teams).

We all hope that we will have American Football games again in Switzerland as soon as possible.
