Coronavirus update of 21 April 2020

On 16 April, the Federal Council informed about a corona exit strategy in three stages. On the same day, the Federal Office of Sports was commissioned to develop a sports exit strategy. According to the Federal Council's communication, the exit strategy is expected to be in place by mid-May in order to start a slow opening from 8 June. The Federal Office of Sports is already working under high pressure this week to develop this exit strategy in order to be ready for an opening earlier.

Nevertheless, it is becoming increasingly clear that normal American football training will probably not be possible for some time yet.

For this reason the SAFV management had to make the following decisions:

  • All scheduled games for May and June will be cancelled.
  • There will be no official championship in 2020 in League B, League C and U19
  • There will be neither promotions nor relegations in the respective leagues in 2020

As we all know, hope dies last, so we remain confident that we will still be able to watch American football games in Switzerland in 2020. As soon as a more or less normal training operation is possible, the association will organise tournaments and friendly matches in cooperation with the teams.

In order to inform the teams in more detail about current developments and plans, a telephone conference will be offered on Saturday, 25 April.

Stay healthy!

Update Coronavirus

Cancellation of the Swiss NLA Championship and other measures in response to Covid-19 / coronavirus

After discussions with our member teams on Saturday 14 March, the SAFV can announce the following points in relation to the 2020 season:

National League A

=> There will be no official NLA championship in 2020 and therefore no Swiss champion (subsequently no NLA team will need to play a relegation game)

=> As soon as the situation allows it, game planning will resume for a replacement season. The specific format and timing of this season will be determined on the basis of the lifting of national and regional restrictions.

Leagues B and C

=> It is unlikely that there will be an official championship in 2020.

=> A decision is pending regarding whether there will be a shortened spring season, a Fall season (from mid August to mid October) or a split season (spring and autumn). In view of the improvised format, relegation and promotion in these leagues is highly unlikely.

U19 Elite & Challenge

=> It is unlikely that there will be an official championship in 2020.

=> A decision is pending regarding whether there will be a shortened spring season, a Fall season (from mid August to mid October) or a split season (spring and autumn).

U16 Season

=> For the time being, these measures do not yet impact the Fall season of U16 Tackle.

Flag Football

=> It is still unclear whether the Flag Football Championship will be postponed. Planned start would be in May.

=> The flag commission is evaluating several scenarios, including a shortened season after the summer break

Women’s Tackle Football

=> All games are postponed until further notice.

The SAFV and its member clubs agree that we want to play again as soon as possible. Please note:

  1. we will not return to practice and play until it is safe to do so. This may mean that different teams can start training again at different times based on guidance from each canton. Such aspects will be taken into account when a match is resumed.
  2. matches would not be resumed until the teams have the opportunity to train before

With regard to all the above points, we expect further guidance from the Confederation and the cantons regarding restrictions on public gatherings and the use of sports facilities in April and May. As soon as we receive this information, the teams and the SAFV will organise additional meetings to discuss and plan 2020 Games. Once these meetings are over, the SAFV will keep our players, fans, sponsors and the media informed through our traditional communication channels (website, social media, email to the teams).

We all hope that we will have American Football games again in Switzerland as soon as possible.

Info: Coronavirus

In the fight against the coronavirus, the Federal Council today further tightened measures. In particular, due to the ban on events involving more than 100 people and the general strategy of slowing down the spread of the virus, management feels compelled to take the following measures:

All games until April 26 are cancelled
This applies to all leagues and all age groups, both in flag and tackle football. Unfortunately as nobody can currently estimate how the situation will look like at the end of April, no decision has been made regarding make up dates or the further progress of the season. We will stay in constant contact with the teams and will look for follow-up solutions.

Most of the training sessions have been stopped
At the moment most of the teams have already stopped training. Such measures are the responsibility of the clubs in accordance with their cantonal guidelines. At this point in time, we advise against regular training in any case.

General Assembly is cancelled
As a result of these measures and recommendations, tomorrow's GA in Ittigen BE will also be cancelled. Here too, it is still unclear whether we will look for a new date or whether the decisions can be made by circulation procedure where possible.

During this time we are very happy to assist the teams with advice and support.
