Pour ses débuts dans le championnat SAFV 2011, les Rapaces faisaient le déplacement au Guintzet, où leur match les opposait aux Cardinals de Fribourg.
Les Lausannois avaient particulièrement à cœur de mieux aborder et gérer cette partie que celle ayant eu lieu une année avant dans des conditions similaires, l’objectif était clairement de repartir avec un W. Une météo particulièrement favorable vit les deux formations prendre du terrain. Les Cardinals ayant gagné le coin toss, ils commencèrent donc la partie en possession du cuir. Le premier quart vit la formation lausannoise démarrer en trombe suite à une interception d’Andrès Ortiz, qu’il remonta à quelques pouces de la end zone adverse. L’offense ne se fit pas prier pour débloquer le compteur sur course, le PAT étant ensuite réussi. Galvanisés par ce début en fanfare, les Rapaces bien à leur affaire se firent de plus en plus incisifs et efficaces. Ce qui leur permit d’arriver à la mi-temps sur un score prometteur de 20-00. La pause fut, comme d’habitude, l’occasion pour les coachs d’ajuster leurs stratégies et de motiver leurs troupes. Le LUC sembla le premier à appliquer les consignes, alors que Mathieu Léchaire retournait le cuir sur le kickoff du 3ème quart dans la end zone adverse. Tout semblait continuer de la meilleure des manières, mais ce fut alors que leurs vieux démons refirent surface. Alternant une défense lunatique, tantôt pugnace tantôt approximative, et une offense se mettant parfois la pression toute seule ; les Lausannois se tirèrent plusieurs fois la balle dans le pied. Les locaux ne se firent pas prier et exploitèrent ces failles généreuses, portant le score à 33-22 à quelques minutes de la fin du match. Cette fin de quart vit des Rapaces plus déterminés en défense (plusieurs turnovers provoqués), mais ceux-ci ne parvinrent néanmoins pas à concrétiser les opportunités offensivement. Ce match aura été l’opportunité pour les Rapaces de se remettre dans le bain, en testant leurs limites, mais aussi leurs possibilités. It’s now time to step the game up. For their debut in the SAFV 2011 championship, the Owls were travelling to the Guintzet, where they were playing their first game against the Fribourg Cardinals. The LUC had particularly at heart to handle this game better, in comparison to the same game last year. A particularly favorable weather saw both teams take the field, as the objective for Lausanne clearly was the W. The Cardinals won the coin toss, so they started the party in possession of the pigskin. The first quarter saw the LUC get off to a flying start after an interception of Andres Ortiz, who was stopped a few inches short of the end zone. The offense did not wait much to get on the board, the PAT being successful. Galvanized by that quick start, the Owls became more and more incisive and effective, which enabled them to reach halftime with a promising 20-0 score. The pause was, as usual, an opportunity for coaches to adjust their strategies and motivate their troops. The LUC was to be the first to apply the new instructions, as Mathieu Léchaire returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown. Everything seemed to be on track, but that’s when their old demons resurfaced. Alternating a volatile defense, and an offense putting itself through unnecessary pressure, the LUC got itself into trouble. The Cardinals jumped on these generous opportunities, bringing the score to 33-22, minutes away from the end of the game. The end of the 4rth quarter saw the Owls fight tooth and nail (causing several turnovers), but they were unable to convert those opportunities offensively. This game has been the opportunity for the Owls to jump back effectively into action, by testing their limits and their opportunities. It’s now time to step up the game. Next milestone: April 17th at 14h for the game against the Thun Tigers in Chavannes-près-Renens.
